Firstly - good news. There is another Atalanta sailor - Reggie Runeckles was born on Tuesday this week, I guess I should sign him up to the AOA! :)Secondly - bad news. Zambra is starting to suffer…Continue

Perkins 4107 rides again

So, after much knuckle scraping, seized bolts and antiquated parts, she's running again. Here's a video:http://youtu.be/V6PNkCOqNioAnd a pic:Decks are now all repaired, sanded and new woodwork is going on. It's really getting moving now!I will make the Mersea meet with any luck...…See More

The engine bites back

We've finally got the engine stripped down, and I've ordered some various parts. Amazingly, Perkins still sell most of what I needed! But, it turned out the heat exchanger was too corroded, so a replacement one is on the way - secondhand - from Chera Marine, in Bradford. The guy there is called Kully, and he is a font of all knowledge when it comes to Perkins. I cannot recommend him highly enough! Here's the problematic part - the body is corroded at the seals, the seals won't seat properly, so…See More

More progress on Zambra

Today we've stripped out the thrust bearing and drive - it looks like an old Aquadrive sort of affair, with two universal joints, a thrust bearing and a 4" hub connecting to the motor. Installed length is 204mm, the shaft diameter is 31.8mm. And it's all knackered! The bearing was rattly and grindy, and one of the universal joints was worn to a point it would get stuck in one position.I think it is all overkill anyway, so I might replace it with a simpler set up - a flexible coupling, straight…See More

Paint job (mostly) complete

So today was the day that all the prep has paid off.

I hope the colour gets the nod. When I stripped off the old black paint, I found some of this colour underneath and thought - why not?

I've used Dulux trade weathershield for the white and colour, and Safekote polyurethane for the deck paint.…

(Not so) Secret weapon....

I had a good result on Ebay - a Max Prop for £100!

The very nice people at Darglow serviced it and cut it down to the right diameter, and supplied the various small screws and pins it requires. All for not much money and very quickly too.

Here's it (finally!) fitted...…

Hi Nick,

I am curious how your ship looks like. Is it possible to upload some photographs.

Nick,

If you take a trip up the Thames please call in to Erith Yacht Club, two and a Half miles upstream from the Dartford Bridge.  You will find A95 not in the water yet and the beer is the cheapest you will find on the river when the bars open.

Dear Nick,

Welcome to the new AOA website, and I hope you'll enjoy it! When you have a moment please upload a photo of yourself on your profile - if you place the cursor over the place where it should go you'll see the link for uploading. Also you can place your home port on the Member Map.

With best wishes,

John
